by Charles Baudelaire (Author)
The fifty pieces that make up this collection were written between 1855 (The Evening Twilight) and 1864. About forty of them appeared in various newspapers of the time (in accordance with Baudelaire's wishes, some of the poems were published in the literary magazine L'Artiste, edited by his friend Arsène Houssaye to whom he dedicated his work, and others in mass-circulation newspapers such as La Presse or Le Figaro). According to a letter from 1862 that serves as a dedication for later editions, Baudelaire was inspired to write them by the example of Aloysius Bertrand. The remaining ten poems were published posthumously between 1867 and 1869.
